Heffernan Alternative Markets Division - (AMD) principals have extensive experience working with self-insured organizations on nationwide basis. We have developed a unique approach to bringing solutions to the table that positively affect our clients' programs. We work closely together with all clients and their designated service providers to foster long-term partnership dedicated to success.

Our AMD team focuses on providing specific services and resources to self-insured groups and individual companies around the nation. Our "Strategic Risk Approach" is a uniquely diversified approach to improving the performance of self-insured programs. This approach goes far beyond the basic broking of insurance. It focuses on consistent and meaningful communication with our clients. The Strategic Risk Approach has been designed to integrate an organization's overall resources in controlling and reducing costs. This involvement is provided from both strategic and tactical levels and focuses on the direct and indirect costs of client's program.

Our senior management is nationally recognized in the area of self-insurance. We bring with us knowledge, resources and expertise to maintain and build a successful self-insurance program. The diversity of our staff spans many disciplines including actuarial, claims, underwriting, marketing, accounting and risk management. We have been actively involved with and have working knowledge of self-insurance pricing, execution and monitoring of loss portfolio transfers, claims and loss prevention consulting, captive formation, excess and reinsurance placements, actuarial analysis, and underwriting reviews. Further, we have an extensive national partner network that encompass specialty disciplines designed for for the self-insurance industry.

We can directly assist you in the placement of:

  • Excess of Loss specific and aggregate insurance for both group and individual qualified self-insured's.
  • Wrap-around coverage for individual self-insured's that operate and have employees in more than the states where they are qualified self-insured's. This may be a large deductible or primary guaranteed cost policy in other states.
  • Self-insured bonds as required in certain state jurisdictions.
  • Trustee's Errors and Omissions coverage for self-insured groups or trusts
  • Property & Casualty coverage for all of our clients
  • Reinsurance on a facultative and treaty basis for workers compensation, general liability and other lines basis

Overview of Services

As a compliment to our services, AMD also has experienced resources to assist you with risk management services as part of our overall service offering.

Utilizing our Strategic Risk Approach, AMD's staff is able to bring a fresh perspective to the Risk Management area. We focus on working with clients and their service providers to outline clear goals and needs with respect to their workers' compensation insurance program. Once these are established, we continually monitor the progress of the program and its' structure to ensure that goals and needs are continually integrated and aligned. We work as a client advocate for issues with the carrier or other third parties as requested. This may involve claims resolution, third party performance audits, analysis or negotiation of coverage designs or simply keeping the process moving forward to meet strategic goals.

If your strategic goals lead you to considering other alternative market options, the AMD team is prepared to assist you in considering many options. With our extensive resources we bring to the table over 100 years of experience in the insurance marketplace. Specifically, we have resources to assist you with captive, rent-a-captive programs and program conversions.

The principals of AMD have experience in the formation and oversight of captive programs as well as have participated in four conversions from self-insured group to Mutual or Stock carriers. In addition, we maintain solid relationships with the various fronting carriers, reinsurers, captive managers and other service providers in multiple domiciles needed to form these programs. We can assist in the formation and oversight of the following types of captives:

  • Agency Captives

We have the resources and capabilities to work with agents, associations and others from start to finish in the captive process. In addition, we can assist in the marketing and placement of reinsurance and fronting carriers for existing captives or other alternative market programs as directed by the prospective client.
